Medical Emergencies

In a life threatening medical emergency you should immediately call 999 and for less urgent medical support 111.
There is a very small, single ambulance station located five minutes away in Grange over Sands, otherwise ambulances will be directed from further away.

Doctors Surgery
Cartmel is very fortunate to have an “Outstanding” rated Doctors Surgery. It is located at: Haggs Lane, Cartmel, LA11 6PH, telephone 01539 536366. The Surgery is open from 8am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday and offers a very wide range of services. Visit them on www.cartmelsurgery.co.uk

Pharmacies
The nearest pharmacies to Cartmel are the two Wells’ Pharmacies on Kents Bank Road, Grange over Sands, Cumbria. The first is next to the Ambulance depot and postcode is LA11 7EY, telephone 01539 532993. The opening hours are Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm and Saturday, 9am to 5pm
The second Wells Pharmacy is also on Kents Bank Road, Grange over Sands next to the Fire Station and Grange Health Centre with postcode LA11 7DJ and phone number 015395-32024. With the same opening hours as above except Saturday closing earlier at 13.00.

Unfortunately, there are no emergency pharmacies local to Cartmel and the nearest are in Kendal approximately 30 minutes away.

Wells Pharmacy, Helme Chase Surgery, Burton Road, Kendal, LA90 7HR. Telephone 01539 737953. The opening hours are 7am to 11pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm on Saturdays and Sundays

Asda, Burton Road, Kendal, LA9 7JA, telephone 01539 742410. The opening hours are 8am to 9pm Monday to Saturday and 10 am to 4pm on Sundays.

During the current Covid-19 crisis, we suggest that you telephone the pharmacies to confirm their opening times before travelling.

Dentists
The nearest NHS and Private dentists to Cartmel are located in Grange over Sands but none offer out of hours emergency treatment. In an emergency, it is best to telephone the Morecambe Dental Centre (NHS) on 0300 1234010. As well as daytime appointments they are open up to 9pm Mondays to Fridays and Saturday and Sunday mornings up to 1:45pm.
Morecambe is about 45 minutes’ drive from Cartmel and their address is Queen Victoria Centre, Thornton Road, Morecambe LA4 5NN.

Public Transport – to and from Cartmel

For International Travellers

The best airport to travel to is Manchester Airport from where it is possible to either get a direct Northern line train to Grange over Sands (three miles to Cartmel) or alternatively the more frequent Trans Pennine train to Lancaster and then changing to the Northern Express line train to Grange over Sands. From Grange over Sands to Cartmel it is suggested that you take a taxi for the short journey and pre-booking is strongly advised. Some local firms are Estate Cars, contact John on 07974-111543, Trevor Grills on 07968341460 and Economical Taxis on 015395-58901.

UK Travellers

For travel from both the North and South (London to Scotland) are well served by the Avanti West Coast line. It is suggested that you alight at Lancaster station and then travel to either Grange over Sands or Cark and Cartmel station. There are also a number of “cross country train services” available. To see times and ticket prices, we suggest you use a booking service such as Trainline

From either of these stations to Cartmel it is suggested that you take a taxi for the short journey and pre-booking is strongly advised. Search for the local taxi listings in the business advertising section of this website.

In and around Cartmel

From either Grange over Sands or Cark station, there are a limited number of local destinations available. Once again either use Trainline or telephone the Booking Office at Grange station (0800 200 6060)

The bus services in and around Cartmel are infrequent and very limited, It is possible to travel to either Grange over Sands or to Kendal and then from these locations onward bus travel is possible, Travellers Choice run the local bus services and information and timetables can be obtained from them (01524 720033)

A short Special Outing

For an interesting half day, take the Northern Express train for the short journey from Grange over Sands to Arnside. The train passes right across Morecambe Bay on low stilts giving magnificent views over the estuary, the mudflats and the bird life. At Arnside you can see the distant views of the mountains in the Lakes and there are a few shops, a couple of pubs and a very goodfish and chip shop to entertain you until you take the short journey back to Grange over Sands and on to Cartmel.
